The aircraft was a Merlin HC3A, one of six aircraft originally ordered by Denmark but bought by the MoD on behalf of the RAF at short notice to bolster support helicopter numbers. Unfortunately, they are quite different to the existing HC3 airframes so will not deploy overseas, but will be retained in the UK, mostly for training. A second Merlin Squadron (no 78) was recently formed and the whole fleet is pooled between 28 and 78 squadrons, the side visible here shows the 78 sqn badge, where as 28's is carried on the other side.
