Despite being far younger and certainly more versatile in the tanker/transport role than the KC-135, the USAF has suggested that the complete inventory of KC-10A's be axed due to budget cuts. The reasoning being that removing a complete type from service would save more money than a scaled reduction of several types, and there are only 59 KC-10A's in the inventory compared to hundreds of KC-135R/T's.
